Living with...

The National Paediatric Diabetes Audit Report 2013-14 published by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership indicates that fewer than 6% of children living with diabetes in England receive care consistent with published guidelines and only 46% receive any structured education about their condition. Preventable diabetic emergencies and deaths are the consequence.

Need

The overall child mortality rate in the UK is higher than in other European countries, primarily because of infant deaths and deaths among children and young people living with long-term health conditions. The number of children and young people with long-term health conditions is rising. A 2012 report for the Association for Young People's Health suggests that establishing good health management in younger years can help an individual affected manage their condition much more effectively over their lifespan, reducing GP visits and also hospitalisations.

In addition, this project focuses on the creation of informative resources for children and young people who are caring for, or living with, a family member with long-term health conditions, to provide a greater understanding and help children and young people cope with these sometimes challenging situations.

Our aim

'Living with...' aims to develop digital learning for children and young people living with long-term health conditions as well as those caring for a family member with long-term health conditions. We aim to promote understanding about long-term health conditions and improve self care and ultimately health outcomes.

How it works

How it works - for children with long-term conditions

Having compiled an extensive list of long-term health conditions (for example, diabetes, asthma, epilepsy), we apply for funding or seek sponsorship to develop two series of digital learning resources about each condition; one for children and one for young people.

Each digital learning series will:

  • provide age-appropriate information about their condition
  • provide age-appropriate information about how they can manage their condition to promote better health
  • explore feelings they may experience in relation to their condition
  • present frequently asked questions
  • provide information about support organisations.

Evaluation

Each digital learning resource has an in-built anonymous evaluation that enables us to evaluate the experiences of children and young people using the resources. Collaborative work with the NHS will also involve the distribution of online questionnaires to healthcare professionals working with children and young people utilising the resources to measure their perceived impact. Where possible, we aim to also gather impact data from parents through an online questionnaire.
